There has been a lot of buzz in the fitness world about the mind-body connection. Chronic stress increases our vulnerability to communicable diseases. The quality of our breath is very different when we are upset than it is when we are watching a good comedy. The mind-body connection is a two-way street that is reflected in the breath. Anyone who engages in an exercise routine has particular motivations for doing so. Underlying these motivations is a signature relationship to one’s body, referred to as “body image.” Body image is at its core a sense of satisfaction with our self and our body on and off the mat. In this article, body image is explored: what is it, how is it shaped, and what steps can we take to improve it.
